Girl With a Pearl Earring- Vermeer
It is an oil portrait canvas created in (c. 1665) by Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer. The Girl With The Pearl Earring stars an imaginary young woman in a peculiar dress and a very large pearl earring. The artwork permanently occupies the Mauritshuis museum in The Hague. Vermeer created only 36 known works in his lifetime and mostly portrayed scenes of ordinary life, later called “genre” painting.
He often depicted women at daily tasks but, here she is caught in a fleeting moment meeting the viewer’s gaze with her eyes wide and lips parted as if about to speak, not concentrating on a daily chore. The oracular expression mingled with her enigmatic identity has led some to compare her to the equivocal subject in Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa (c. 1503–19).
Guernica-Pablo Picasso
Guernica was created in 1937 by world-renowned painter Picasso. This enormous mural-sized painting holds significant historical importance not only because of its exquisite beauty but also the way Picasso expressed his outrage against the war with Guernica. This painting is not easy to decipher, depicting death and dying everywhere we look. It has henceforth become the twentieth century’s most powerful citation against war, a painting that still feels strongly relevant today.
