Mona Lisa – Leonardo da Vinci
The portrait of the Mona Lisa was created by Leonardo Da Vinci in the Middle Age (1509 – 13). It is one of the most famous and expensive paintings in the world, and yet, when intrigues get to see the portrait up close, they are bewildered by the small hushed portrait of an ordinary woman. There is no doubt that the portrait is beautiful, and Vinci has made it exquisite by his close imitation of nature.
But many scholars, nonetheless, point out that the exemplary portrait of the Mona Lisa was not enough by itself to make the painting iconic. Foreign events also contributed to the artwork’s glory. The portrait’s abode is the Louvre, one of the most-visited museums in the world, a promising case that has added to the work’s stature. The painting became part of the royal collection and The painting became part of the royal collection adding significance to the painting.
The Kiss- Gustav Klimt
The Kiss was created by Gustav Klimt, a Viennese painter in 1908 in his golden age. The notion of two embracing figures was not unheard of in Klimt’s works. In this 6*6 ft painting, we cannot see the face of the man as he is bent over, cradling the woman’s face between his hands and kissing her on the cheek. The woman’s face is turned up towards the kiss, with eyes delicately closed and one of her arms draped around his neck.
For Klimt’s 150th birthday Adrian Brijbassi wrote, “The Kiss by Gustav Klimt surpasses expectations”, “The Kiss does what a great piece of art is supposed to do: Hold your gaze, make you admire its aesthetic qualities while trying to discern what’s beyond its superficial aspects.”
Girl With a Pearl Earring- Vermeer
It is an oil portrait canvas created in (c. 1665) by Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer. The Girl With The Pearl Earring stars an imaginary young woman in a peculiar dress and a very large pearl earring. The artwork permanently occupies the Mauritshuis museum in The Hague. Vermeer created only 36 known works in his lifetime and mostly portrayed scenes of ordinary life, later called “genre” painting.
He often depicted women at daily tasks but, here she is caught in a fleeting moment meeting the viewer’s gaze with her eyes wide and lips parted as if about to speak, not concentrating on a daily chore. The oracular expression mingled with her enigmatic identity has led some to compare her to the equivocal subject in Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa (c. 1503–19).
Guernica-Pablo Picasso
Guernica was created in 1937 by world-renowned painter Picasso. This enormous mural-sized painting holds significant historical importance not only because of its exquisite beauty but also the way Picasso expressed his outrage against the war with Guernica. This painting is not easy to decipher, depicting death and dying everywhere we look. It has henceforth become the twentieth century’s most powerful citation against war, a painting that still feels strongly relevant today.
Takeaway
The artworks mentioned above are some of the most famous and exquisite. All art lovers must bless their eyes and go enjoy these ethereal pieces of artwork at least once in their lifetime.
